Unprecedented times
info.ndr.com: [Excerpt] NDR: Market Digest, August 2024.
As market historians, we find rare market events fascinating as they provide perspective and historical parallels. This presidential election cycle is notable for several reasons: Trump is the first former president convicted of felonies, and he is the first candidate shot on the campaign trail since 1972. The biggest surprise was Biden withdrawing from the race. There are five cases since 1900 when the incumbent chose not to seek re-election. All but one occurred before the 22nd amendment established presidential term limits. The lack of an incumbent did not derail the typical second-half election-year rally (see chart)

Election Report - August 2024
blogs.microsoft.com: [Excerpt] Today we’re sharing intelligence about activity we’ve been tracking that increasingly points to Iran’s intent to influence this year’s US presidential election. In recent weeks, groups connected with the Iranian government have upped two kinds of activity. First, they’ve laid the groundwork for influence campaigns on trending election-related topics and begun to activate these campaigns in an apparent effort to stir up controversy or sway voters – especially in swing states. Second, they’ve launched operations that Microsoft assesses are designed to gain intelligence on political campaigns and help enable them to influence the elections in the future.

DNC Virtual Roll Call
apnews.com: [Excerpt] The Democratic National Committee said Kamala Harris secured enough delegates to become the Democratic Party’s nominee for president in a virtual roll call of delegates, which concluded Monday, Aug. 5.
Joe Biden dropped out of the race for president on July 21, only a few weeks before the Democratic National Convention and the vote of delegates that would have confirmed his place as the party’s White House nominee.
Biden’s delegates won in the primaries were free to support any other candidate, but Harris was the only candidate to qualify for the virtual roll call. All votes cast for anyone other than Harris are counted as “present.”

DNC and DNCC Chairs Announce Results of Presidential Nominating Petition Process and Opening of Virtual Roll Call on August 1 (7/30/24): [Excerpt] Highlights of the Democratic nomination process:
3,923 delegates from across the country petitioned to put Vice President Harris on the ballot for the Democratic nomination, and Vice President Harris secured the support of 99% of participating delegates, with 84% of total delegates submitting a signature during the petitioning phase. No other candidate met the threshold of 300 delegate signatures to qualify for the ballot.
The DNC Chair and DNCC Chair announced today that the electronic roll call will commence at 9:00 AM ET on August 1, marking the official beginning of the 2024 Convention. Delegates will receive a secure ballot and support to cast their vote on a rolling basis starting at 9:00 AM ET.
The roll call voting period will end at 6:00 PM ET on August 5, the deadline for delegates to return their ballot.
Because Kamala Harris has the verified support of a number of pledged delegates equal to or greater than a majority of all pledged and automatic delegates, the votes of both pledged delegates and automatic delegates will be counted on the first ballot.

foxnews.com: [Excerpt] The Trump-Kamala debate would be held Sept. 4 in Pennsylvania.
The moderators of the debate will be Fox News anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.
The debate rules will be similar to the rules of the June 27 CNN debate against Biden, who Trump wrote "has been treated horribly by his Party." But unlike the CNN debate, which did not have an audience, the Fox News debate will have spectators.
Fox News had invited Trump and Harris to participate in a debate in Pennsylvania on Sept. 17.
"I have agreed with FoxNews to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4th," Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. "The Debate was previously scheduled against Sleepy Joe Biden on ABC, but has been terminated in that Biden will no longer be a participant, and I am in litigation against ABC Network and George Slopadopoulos, thereby creating a conflict of interest."

Today we watched a Polymarket trader essentially incinerate $770k in less than 10 minutes
@faybomb: Today we watched a Polymarket trader essentially incinerate $770k in less than 10 minutes. Utilizing four different “markets,” this person had a highly concentrated bet that would have paid out $1.2 million if President Biden had resigned in tonight’s address.
As of this moment, he/she has a $98k realized loss, a $442k paper loss, and very little chance of getting out of this debacle whole. Perhaps a not so obvious question; but how could a $770k bet only bring in $1.2 million on such a long shot outcome?
It appears as though the person either didn’t understand how to read the order book, didn’t know the difference between limit and market orders, or some combination of the two. The execution of this wager was so bad, it actually looked like someone was panic trading insider knowledge at any price.
The lesson? Understand the markets you’re trading. Understand the platform you’re using. Limit orders are your friend. And don’t assume you can fill your entire order at the lowest ask.

Harris says she looks forward to accepting Democrats' nomination soon
axios.com: [Excerpt] Vice President Kamala Harris said late Monday she's "proud to have secured the broad support needed" to become the Democratic Party's presidential nominee — one day after President Biden suspended his re-election campaign and endorsed her.
🔹Related content:
Democrats plan to have nominee by Aug. 7: [Excerpts] The Democratic National Committee has confirmed it will hold a "virtual roll call” to select its party's presidential nominee before Aug. 7.
State of play: Any announced candidate who has 300 delegates (with no more than 50 from a single state ) will be eligible to appear on the first electronic ballot.
AP Democratic Delegate Survey: [excerpt] An Associated Press survey finds that Kamala Harris has secured the support of enough Democratic delegates to become her party’s nominee against Donald Trump.
The delegate survey is different from AP’s count of delegates won during the primary. The survey is an unofficial tally, as Democratic delegates are free to vote for the candidate of their choice when the party picks its new nominee.
Endorsed by Joe Biden after his decision to leave the race, Harris quickly locked up the support of her party’s donors, elected officials and other leaders. No other candidate was named by a delegate in the survey and Harris now appears to have the backing of more than the 1,976 delegates she’ll need to claim the nomination.
AP will continue to update the survey leading into the opening of the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 19 in Chicago.

As the daughters of another president who gave his all for America, we are so proud of you again as we have always been
🔹Related content:
@Andrea_Texas_82: On March 31, 1968, President Lyndon Johnson surprised American television viewers by announcing his decision not to seek re-election. This marked the first time in over fifty years that an incumbent president had not chosen to pursue a second term. This unprecedented decision occurred amidst escalating political tensions surrounding the Vietnam War and a decline in public approval.
On a similar note, President Biden announced his choice to step aside yesterday, allowing Vice President Kamala Harris to challenge Trump in the upcoming November election.
I am sure investors will recalibrate their Trump trade now that Biden has thrown the towel.
The current performance of small caps has been noteworthy.
While June marked the Russell 2000's poorest month relative to NASDAQ since May 2023, July has demonstrated its most robust performance since November 2016. However, I am skeptical regarding the rotation into small caps. Over 40% of Russell 2000 companies have leveraged their balance sheets with private credit, primarily in the form of floating-rate debt. With the Federal Reserve unlikely to significantly reduce interest rates, the majority of small companies' free cash flow will continue to be absorbed by the obligations of floating-rate debt.
As previously highlighted, the shift towards value stocks appears to be gaining traction, offering potential benefits for investors.
As we enter the turbulent and uncertain pre-election political period, I anticipate that markets will exhibit significant volatility and sideways movement.
Given the expected market turbulence, I strongly recommend that investors adhere to discipline. Based on my experience, dollar-cost averaging, rather than frequent trading, is a highly effective strategy for navigating the forthcoming period of four to five months, during which the markets may display erratic behavior

My Fellow Americans
@JoeBiden: My Fellow Americans,
Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a Nation.
Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We've made historic investments in rebuilding our Nation, in lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and in expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans. We've provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years.
Appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world. America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today.
I know none of this could have been done without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once in a century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We've protected and preserved our Democracy. And we've revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.
It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.
I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.
For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me reelected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all this work. And let me express my heartfelt appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me.
I believe today what I always have: that there is nothing America can't do - when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America.

@stockinsider: If Joe Biden were to drop out of the presidential race, Vice-President Kamala Harris is the likely replacement. Democrat leaders would work to unite the party around a new candidate. Harris is favored, with Biden previously stating she is qualified to be president. The nomination is not guaranteed, and party factions must align. Why does the VIX future term structure peak in Oct and not November, when the election actually occurs?
@6_Figure_Invest : Normally $VIX futures are priced high when they first start trading and then decay down, eventually expiring close to the $VIX spot (assuming a relatively quiet market). This will likely not be the case for the next few months. The current October VIX future's price doesn't reflect the typical premiums, usually driven by cost of money, option decay characteristics, etc. Instead it mostly reflects event risk from the upcoming election.
Why does the VIX future term structure peak in Oct and not November, when the election actually occurs? Because the the Oct VIX future price is based on S&P 500 options ($SPX) expiring November 15th, not October. This odd configuration actually makes a lot of sense because options with 30 days to expiration are much more stable and predictable than on the day they expire. Using SPX options with 30 days until expiration is a much more suitable time to have the complex final settlement auction (called the HOSS) that's used to set the final expiration price of VIX futures. VIX options expire at the same time, to that same final expiration price.
So, the price of the Oct VIX futures is established by the prices of Nov SPX options, which reflect the uncertainty of the election. A similar thing happens when corporations release earnings, if there is a lot of uncertainty/potential volatility associated with the earnings release, both the put and call prices expiring soon after the release date carry a higher premium.
It's unlikely the uncertainty of the election will decrease before the election occurs, so guess what, the Oct future's price will likely stay elevated rather than decaying down to the spot VIX price. So, instead of the Oct VIX future dropping near expiration towards the VIX we will likely see the spot VIX price increasing (it starts using the Nov SPX options for its calculation too). Oh, and don't think VIX options can be used to profit from this, they are tied to the futures that expire the month they do, not the spot VIX...
VIX Futures don't operate in a vacuum, the futures before and after the Oct futures are also affected by this event risk. Arbitrage considerations tend to cause the futures surrounding the event be pulled towards the event price, smoothing out the term structure before and after.
Understandably this unusual behavior confuses a lot of people. The high contango in the front part of the VIX futures term structure will over estimate how much short term loss there will be in the long vol ETFs. A VIX futures term structure in contango doesn't mechanically create losses in Volatility ETFs like $VXX, $UVIX, and $UVXY (https://sixfigureinvesting.com/2016/09/the-cost-of-contango-its-not-the-daily-roll)
Once the event is over, the uncertainty is lessened (usually....) and then we can expect the VIX term structure to revert to its normal behavior, but this does not happen immediately. Volatility has a fast up, slow down characteristic. It takes a while for volatility to decay back to levels consistent with actual market volatility.

Democrats plan to formally nominate Biden in early August, ahead of convention
nbcnews.com: [Excerpt] Despite calls for more time to consider alternative nominees, Democrats are planning a virtual roll call vote weeks ahead of their national convention.
The plan was formally announced in a letter to Democratic National Committee members sent Wednesday morning, which comes after weeks of internal struggle about whether to stick with Biden after a weak debate performance.
Parties typically nominate their presidential standard bearers during live roll call votes at their national conventions, which are often a highlight of the events. But Democrats have been planning for the unusual pre-convention virtual roll call to avoid potential litigation in Ohio, they say.

@arClandestine: For those asking “Why J.D. Vance?”: Trump told us his logic with the announcement. Currently, the tightest races are in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The Rust Belt states will decide the 2024 election. Vance is from Ohio, and Trump told us in his announcement, that Vance’s job during the campaign will be to focus on winning over the hardworking people in these states. Vance is a Midwest/Rust Belt guy, who hopefully can appeal to these voters, and put Trump over the top in these battleground states. That’s the thought process behind the pick. Logically, it makes sense. Now we just have to make it work

The finance, insurance and real estate sectors have donated $247 million to Republican candidates in the current two-year political cycle, versus $227 million to Democrats, according to data crunched by OpenSecrets. Focus on donations supporting presidential hopefuls, and Trump is the financiers' clear favorite, collecting $115 million to Biden's $46 million. S&P 500 sector returns post 2020 US election
lipperalpha.refinitiv.com: [Excerpt] Even with everything that the pandemic had to throw at the economy, the four-year electoral equity cycle, whereby the fourth year of the presidential term delivers the highest returns while the mid-term year is usually the 'sweet spot' in terms of cheapness, seems inescapable. Markets have a lot to digest in 2024, with the potential ramifications of an uncertain presidential race topping the list.
Labour markets are also nearing peak conditions, with some indicators suggesting a slowdown in hiring. However, the US equity market has been exhibiting impressive second semester momentum so far. Despite some signs of slowing economic growth, primarily at the consumer level, earnings remain impressive. In some sectors like industrials and healthcare, labour costs are expected to increase in the near term, putting some pressure on profit margins and flattening equity returns. Expectations of a Fed cut later this year have boosted the valuations of almost all sectors — except utilities. Technically, the S&P 500 remains in a bull market and above its long-term uptrend, even after the eventful presidential debate that raised uncertainty as to whether the sitting president would — or rather is able — to stand for re-election. It seems as though the only thing that could upset the S&P 500 are the overbought conditions in the information technology sector, which could lead to a pause or pullback in this rally. If anything, the election seasonality pattern suggests that dips should be bought, as the S&P 500 tends to finish higher in an election year, especially if the first half of the year is as positive as it was in 2024.

More Democratic Voters Than Not Want Biden Replaced After Debate Performance
pro.morningconsult.com: [Excerpt] 3 in 10 Democrats say Harris should be the party’s nominee if Biden drops bid.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
While our post-debate survey shows President Joe Biden has lost no immediate ground to Trump, most voters, including a 47% plurality of Democrats, say Biden should be replaced as the Democratic candidate for president.
A clear majority of debate-viewing voters (57%) say Trump performed best on Thursday, including 19% of Democrats, 60% of independents and 93% of Republicans.
The Biden campaign viewed last night’s debate as another opportunity to assuage concerns about his age and mental acuity, but that didn’t work: Among debate viewers, 78% say Biden is too old, compared with 64% of all voters who said the same days before the debate.
In a shift from 2020, voters were slightly more likely to say the debate moderators favored Trump than Biden.

He was in support of multiple compromises that made it possible for slavery to spread into the western territories acquired by the Louisiana Purchase & the Mexican War.
